The Small Business Administration recently announced a new online resource for entrepreneurs. According to a press release, the organization plans to specifically address smaller businesses that work with the government. While the site is not serving its full purpose yet, the launch includes such features as electronic forms and an eligibility tool for various programs.
This site is certify.sba.gov, and as of this writing it is solely open to the Women-Owned Small Business Program. The next scheduled for inclusion is the 8(a) Business Development Program, set to be added this coming fall, while next spring will see the site incorporate the HUBZone Program and Dynamic Small Business Search as well.
“As of this writing it is solely open to the Women-Owned Small Business Program.”
In the release, Maria Contreras-Sweet, the SBA’s administrator, said that small businesses are responsible for around two-thirds of the economy’s net new jobs.
“This new website first focuses on closing market gaps for women entrepreneurs in the federal marketplace by featuring the Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) Program as we work toward breaking federal contracting goals for a second year in fiscal year 2016,” she said.
According to the SBA website, the WOSB program has existed since 2011 and focuses on the economically disadvantaged. To qualify for this initiative, participating businesses must be 51 percent or greater woman-controlled and owned, and primarily managed by at least one woman. The company also has to be designated as “small” by SBA standards and have its owners demonstrate proof of economic disadvantage.
