As women look to make greater gains in business and own more establishments, data shows us the exact types of business this demographic is running. Specifically, the online services search company Thumbtack recently published the results of a survey showing, among other things, the top 40 different types of businesses owned by women. As the source said, these tended to be in creative fields which require social skills and often include a managing component.
The number one business was house cleaner, with the top ten also including makeup artist, photographer, wedding services, interior designer, personal trainer, massage therapist and drop-off caterer.
Other jobs in the list included creative, health and home care positions, although there were some outliers, such as bartender or tax preparer. The source said that women in the wider company tend to work in “healthcare, social assistance and education.”
It’s worth noting that this data comes from just 20,557 women polled in the first six months of this year. The National Association of Women Business Owners has a grander picture: As of 2015, it stated that women owned more than 9.4 million firms in the country and that 2.9 million firms are majority-owned by women of color. In addition, 4.2 percent of all women-owned businesses had revenue at least as high as $1 million.
