Why Golf Matters in Business
As the golf season winds down, we’re excited to take you behind the scenes of Growth Capital’s Fabulous Foursomes—the “Fab4.” But this isn’t just a season recap; it’s the story of connection, collaboration, and community. Through these outings, we’ve seen firsthand how a simple round of golf can foster deep connections, growth, and shared joy.
The idea for Fab4 came unexpectedly to John Kropf in 2023, during a golf outing with Tesa Salopek and her colleagues, Jennifer Villyard and Liz Roth. That day, a vision took shape. John saw Fab4 as more than golf; he wanted a space outside the daily demands of Growth Capital where relationships could grow beyond meetings and emails. Golf became the bridge, creating a relaxed environment, especially for our female partners and business owners, where connections deepened, laughter flowed, and lasting memories were made.
One recent Fab4 participant, Jennifer Malcolm, captured the essence of this vision perfectly in her reflections:
Jennifer’s Story
“Have you ever been invited to a golf outing and thought, ‘Oh no, what am I getting into?’ That was my feeling when I signed up for Fab4 last month. Golf was new to me, and I’d only ever played with my husband, Chad. So, going solo was both nerve-wracking and exciting. The morning of the event, I fumbled with my bag, feeling out of place—but then everything changed. Kelly Smith, John Kropf, and my friend Becky Workman were on my Fab4 team, and from the start, I felt welcomed and at ease.
Although it was only my second round of the year, the atmosphere was supportive, not competitive. I realized Fab4 wasn’t just about golf; it was about being part of a community that valued growth and enjoyment. I felt empowered, encouraged, and, most of all, connected to something meaningful beyond the game. This day was about more than just golf. John’s vision for Fab4 became clear: a welcoming space for women to develop confidence and enjoy the journey, both on the course and in life.”
Eight Reasons Why Fab4 Golf Outings Are Special
Together, our Fab4 members highlighted why these outings have become so impactful:
- Confidence Building: Golf allows small victories to build confidence, empowering us both on and off the course.
- Stress Relief: The outdoor setting provides a natural escape to relax, breathe, and de-stress.
- Physical Fitness: Golf promotes body awareness and flexibility in a gentle, low-impact way.
- Supportive Learning: Fab4 provides a non-judgmental space to learn and grow at your own pace.
- Community: Joining like-minded women creates a strong sense of belonging.
- Mental Clarity: Golf sharpens focus and offers a chance to clear your mind.
- Empowerment through Skill Mastery: As skills improve, so does a sense of empowerment.
- Safety in Learning: John and Kelly prioritize a safe environment for all to enjoy and learn.
Golf, as many of our members say, isn’t just a game; it’s an experience that mirrors life. Lessons on the course often translate to life, like letting go after each shot or enjoying the journey more than the destination.
Reflections from Our Fab4 Community
The camaraderie is felt across our Fab4 family. Here’s what Becky Workman shared about her experience:
“Golf has always been a game of strategy and patience, but it’s the camaraderie that makes it rewarding. When John invited me to join Fab4, I was nervous but excited. I felt completely comfortable and supported. John and Kelly created an atmosphere where my skills were praised, and I could learn at my own pace. It was truly a perfect day.”
A Note from John and Kelly
“The Growth Capital Fab4 has grown into much more than four people playing a round of golf. It’s about connection, learning, and inspiring each other to grow. Each group brings unique talents, stories, and laughter. We’ve hit great shots and a few not-so-great ones, shared stories, laughed, and left with new friendships. A true circle of trust has formed that will lead to professional and personal success.” – Kelly Smith
“As we reflect on this season, it’s clear that Fab4 is more than golf—it’s about celebrating growth, building confidence, and fostering relationships. We may not close a deal after every round, but over time, these connections strengthen our mission at Growth Capital to support women in business—and yes, sometimes, a little ‘monkey business’ too!” – John Kropf
The Fab4 Vision Continues
As we close this season, we’re reminded that golf is about more than the game itself; it’s about relationships and shared experiences that extend beyond the course. John’s vision to create a space for women to connect, learn, and grow is now a reality, and Fab4 has become a place for building confidence, finding community, and simply enjoying the journey.
So, whether you’re a seasoned pro or picking up a club for the first time, Growth Capital invites you to join Fab4 in 2025. Together, we’ll continue to tee off, support each other, and create lasting memories. Let’s keep swinging, on the course and in life. See you at the first tee! 🏌️♀️
