The Department of Defense’s (DoD) Office of Small Business Programs focuses many of their efforts on building connections between small businesses and national security efforts. Their mission is to maximize how much of the United States’ combat and economic power remains within the country’s borders. In order to achieve this mission, the DoD has several programs designed to support small businesses owned and operated in the United States. Through these partnerships, national security and economic development become a joint effort.
Current DoD Small Business Programs
The Department of Defense (DoD) has a proven dedication to partnering with and supporting small businesses of all kinds. They are committed to embodying inclusionary practices that promote business growth across industries and in traditionally underserved populations. We’d like to highlight two DoD Office of Small Business Programs offerings that most notably help small businesses.
- Mentor-Protege Program (MPP)—The Mentor-Protege Program (MPP) is the DoD’s longest-running business development program. It is designed to pair small businesses attempting to enter the defense industrial field with larger companies already succeeding in those spaces. Historically, these partnerships have led to the small business proteges being able to create long-lasting partnerships in sourcing and financing, as well as mentor companies building stronger community ties.
- Small Disadvantaged Business Program—As part of their commitment to focusing support where it is needed most, the DoD prioritizes assisting small businesses owned by disadvantaged persons in securing federal contracts. Given that only 10% of all federal contract dollars are reserved for small businesses, the Small Disadvantaged Business Program is a vital form of support. Small businesses who are majority owned by disadvantaged persons are certainly encouraged to register!
